- This wedding invitation uses Arabic-influenced language items which are highlighted in the text on this activity page. For example, the words Allah, musholla, and Assalamu’alaikum are a few of the Arabic words that appear on this invitation. Words have been borrowed from Arabic into the Malay and Indonesian languages since the coming of the Islamic faith in the 14th century, but in the past two decades, there has been an increase in borrowings coinciding with the resurgence of Islamic piety in Indonesia. It is common to see Arabic borrowings in written texts coming from the Indonesian Islamic community such as this wedding invitation.
- The akad nikah is the marriage contract made at an Islamic wedding. The religious ceremony at which the akad nikah is signed is usually early on the wedding day at a mosque or prayer house. In general, only close family members attend this ceremony. At a Catholic wedding ceremony, the bride and groom celebrate the sacrament of matrimony (sakramen pernikahan), while Protestants celebrate the consecration of the wedding (pemberkatan pernikahan).
The resepsi pernikahan, the wedding reception, generally occurs after the religious ceremony, often in the evening and includes food and entertainment. Although traditionally the reception is a large event to which numerous friends and family are invited, for economic reasons many couples prefer a small celebration. - The word mushola, meaning prayer house or prayer area, is a borrowing from Arabic. In Arabic, the word is spelled with two l’s (musholla), while in Indonesia the pronunciation is the same with one or two l’s. While the official spelling is musholla, one frequently sees the word spelled mushola.
- On this Yogyakarta map, the abbreviation km (for kilometer) is used to label sections of long roads. For example, one might say that one lives at kilometer 5.5 on Jalan Kaliurang in Yogyakarta. Rather than referring to cross streets near the house, this use of the kilometer marker gives the interlocutor a good idea of where the house is located on this road.
- There are a variety of naming systems reflecting the ethnic diversity of Indonesia. Some people have one name, while others have three, four, or even five names. Compare, for example, the one name of the bride, Marizna, with the three names of the groom, Hartadi Eko Pradigdo. A few ethnic groups have family names, but most Indonesians do not.
People frequently shorten one of their names and that is the name they are known by (nama panggilan). For example, in this invitation, Marizna is shortened to Rizna and Hartadi to Adi. It is common for the nama panggilan to be the end of one of the full names. Other examples of shortened names are Sutrisna becomes Trisna and Suhartini becomes Tini.
